Overview ▾
About this Position
The position works with a high degree of independence and initiative to provide counseling services primarily to students that receive financial assistance funded by the NextGen project. The position will develop a thorough knowledge of the NextGen project, of the Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services (CREES) and of the Northern Marianas College. The position works under the direct supervision of the NextGen Principle Investigator.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s Degree from the U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited institution in counseling, social work, or directly related field and four (4) years of experience working with students in an education setting and experience working with underrepresented community learners from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; or;
- A Master’s Degree from the U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited institution in counseling, social work, or directly related field and two (2) years of experience working with students in an education setting and working with underrepresented community learners from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds;
- Appropriate credentials and licensing may be requested.

- Experience working in multicultural and/or multilingual settings;
- Ability to communicate with diverse audiences from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
- Ability to collaborate and coordinate with other individuals while exercising initiative, diplomacy, tact, creativity and balance;
- Experience working with minimal supervision.
- Ability to apply mental health counseling methods and techniques;
- Knowledge of community mental health resources;
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques;
- Knowledge of case management;
- Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures;
- Interviewing and psychological / developmental evaluation skills;
- Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses;
- Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring, and interpretation;
- Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients’ rights;
- Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
Duties & Responsibilities ▾
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participates in Program Review and Outcomes Assessment (PROA) activities.
- Demonstrate the core values of CREES through everyday action to maintain a collaborative and transparent workplace culture;
- Participates in Program Review and Outcomes Assessment (PROA) activities as guided by NMC PROAC for the NextGen project;
- Develop orientation presentations to students that receive financial assistance under the NextGen grant project prior to their departure for college and/or university;
- Provide personal virtual and/or face-to-face counseling services to students that receive financial assistance under the NextGen grant project;
- Conduct bi-weekly check-in sessions with students that receive financial assistance under the NextGen grant project and produce relevant reports;
- Maintain a systematic case record for efficient and ethical data management;
- Provide guidance to students that receive financial assistance under the NextGen grant project in the development of skills and strategies to deal with life challenges;
- Maintain healthy and ethical client relationships with students that receive financial assistance under the NextGen grant project;
- Participate in community outreach events as assigned by the NextGen program leadership;
- Develop mental health presentations and counseling workshops for community learners;
- Upon request, coordinate with social and/or medical agencies, healthcare providers and community outreach programs to provide students with needed services;
- Participate in professional development activities in counseling to address the unique challenges faced by the Pacific Islander communities;
- Participates in in-service training programs as required, as well as frequent travel inter-island during specified periods of time.
- Work with the NMC counseling personnel to develop programs that improve the overall mental health of students;
- Consult with appropriate entities with regard to crisis planning, resolution and care coordination;
- Examine various mental health, emotional and psychological issues relevant to college education and indigenous student populations;
- Provide consultation to parents as needed to assist with understanding of students’ psychological needs;
- Perform other related duties as required.
Additional Information ▾
Essential Functions of the Position
Must be able to frequently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. The individual in this position will frequently communicate with students and their colleague(s) in order to exchange information in various situations. Occasionally lifts office equipment, furniture and miscellaneous products and supplies, weighing up to 10 Ibs.

The employee may be tasked to work outdoors in the sun and heat, on or around wet surfaces, and other areas exposed to the elements.
