The latest news from Northern Marianas College

After enduring two supertyphoons, the Northern Marianas College Rota Center hosted eight individuals for an AdultHealth and Nutrition training on Friday, September 11, 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to advance healthy living and nutrition education for all.

The nutrition training was provided by NMC’s Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services (CREES) Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) through the CNMI Technology Partners Increasing Employment through Coordinated Services, or Tech PIECS. The training was meant to encourage individuals with disabilities to participate in programs that promote hands-on learning, practical skills development, and increased opportunities for personal growth and participation at zero cost.

“At the NMC Rota Center, we are committed to creating learning opportunities that are accessible, practical, and responsive to the needs of our community. This presentation is a great example of how our partnerships can bring meaningful education directly to the people of Rota. Even during challenging times, we can continue to support individuals and families by providing knowledge and skills that can be applied in everyday life. We are grateful to NMC-CREES EFNEP and Tech PIECS for making this opportunity possible and for their shared commitment to strengthening the health, well-being, and participation of our Rota community.” stated NMC Interim Executive Director Diana B. Hocog.

Led by Flavian H. Pua, NMC-CREES Rota Nutrition and Health Program Extension Aide, participants learned about making healthy food choices and building balanced meals, along with practical nutrition tips to support energy, wellness, and everyday health. The session emphasized simple and realistic approaches to healthy eating that anybody can apply in their daily lives.

Participants also created a healthy meal together in a hands-on activity where they learned how to prepare skillet lasagna. Given the current power situation on Rota post-Super Typhoon Bavi, the recipe provided a practical alternative to oven-baked meals, where many Rota residents may not have the ability to use an oven.

Through the hands-on activity, participants had the opportunity to apply the nutrition concepts discussed during the presentation while learning how healthy and satisfying meals can be prepared using accessible cooking methods. The activity also demonstrated how practical nutrition education can help individuals and families adapt to changing circumstances while continuing to make informed and healthy food choices.

“Being part of the Tech PIECS session was meaningful because it allowed me to share simple, practical nutrition lessons that can lead to healthier choices and stronger communities. What stood out most was how participants connected the lessons to their own lives. It reminded me that effective nutrition education is not just about teaching, it is about listening, building trust, and making healthy living feel achievable for everyone.” stated Flavian H. Pua.

The collaboration between NMC CREES EFNEP and Tech PIECS reflects the College’s continued commitment to providing inclusive learning opportunities that support the diverse needs of the CNMI community. By combining nutrition education with hands-on experiences, the program aims to empower participants with practical knowledge and skills that can contribute to their overall wellness and everyday quality of life.
