New NMC Presidential Search Committee Convenes (January 19, 2011)

The members of the new Northern Marianas College Presidential Search Committee convened yesterday to begin their work toward helping to select the next President of the College.

The new members who were appointed by the NMC Board of Regents include:

  1. Andrew Orsini, NMC Board of Regents (PSC Chair)
  2. David Sablan, President, Century Insurance Company
  3. John Oliver Gonzales, Executive Director, Joeten-Kiyu Library
  4. Jesus Elameto, Retiree and former PSS Administrator
  5. Juanita Mendiola, Former Tinian Municipal Council Chairperson
  6. Barbara Merfalen, Dean, NMC Academic Programs and Services
  7. Antonio Tiples, President, Associated Students of the Northern Marianas College

The Committee has been tasked with helping to screen candidates by interviewing them and recommending a short list to the Board of Regents, who will make the final selection.

During the meeting, Chairperson Orsini thanked each of the members for agreeing to take on the important responsibilities of deciding whose names will be transmitted to the NMC Board of Regents. He also recognized the work placed forth by the previous search committee members.

“I want to thank you for your commitment to the College,” Orsini said when addressing the PSC members.

Chairperson Orsini emphasized that the search process must move forward with integrity and transparency.

During the meeting, the members voted to appoint John Gonzales to become the co-chairperson of the Committee. The members also formed two subcommittees: a Public Relations Committee and an Interview Committee.

The search process will be aided by the Association of Community College Trustees, a national nonprofit educational association that has assisted numerous other colleges and universities with their search for a CEO/President. The ACCT has been receiving applicants to the vacancy announcement that has been published in various media outlets.

The Presidential Search Committee anticipates that the ACCT will be transmitting the names of applicants sometime this week. The deadline set for the submission of applications was January 15, 2011.
