NMC TRiO Students Participate in Photo Essay Contest (January 11, 2011)

Students from the Northern Marianas College’s federal TRiO Upward Bound program recently competed in the TRiO Quest Photo Essay 2010 competition in which three students’ submissions made it to the quarter- and semi-finals.

The competition was open to all participants in any of the federal TRiO programs. The TRiO programs at NMC serve as educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The College hosts the Educational Talent Search program, as well as the Upward Bound program.

The participating students were from various public high schools, including Saipan Southern High School, Marianas High School, Kagman High School, and Rota High School. Each student submitted a photo they had taken accompanied with an original work of prose, or poetry.

“The concept of the TRiO Quest contests is to emphasize educational uses of the Web and promote critical thinking, intellectual honesty and proper citation skills," said NMC Upward Bound program director Marian Tudela. “The students can also use this experience to add to their high school resumes when applying to college.”

The students that participated in the competition are Clayton Aguon, Ezra Caro, Renzie Cunanan, Ray Mark Denora, Magdalena Lisua, Alodia Lumasag, Jonah Mendiola, Elizabeth Moded, Amanda Santos, Dan Tumaquip, Kimiko Wally, and Allison Palattao.

Some student entries also made it to the competition finals. Jack Kileleman, SSHS sophomore, made it to the quarter-finals with his entry titled “Heavenly Sky.” Rota High School junior, Mariah Barcinas, also made it to the quarter-finals with her entry “Rota.” Another RHS student and senior, Katelyn Alpino, made it to the semi-finals with her entry titled “The American Flag”.

All the students were recently awarded certificates of appreciation for their participation in the competition.
