NMC Hires New Human Services Instructor (January 10, 2011)

The Northern Marianas College recently hired Jose Herrera to work as a human services instructor at the School of Education (SOE).

NMC’s School of Education offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with concentrations in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Rehabilitation and Human Services, and Special Education.

“We are delighted to welcome Jose to NMC,” said Acting Interim President Barbara Merfalen. “His educational background, coupled with his experience in the field, will prove beneficial to the School of Education.”

Before starting out at NMC, Herrera worked as a coordinator of special services for the Tarrant County College District in Texas, performing such tasks as academic advising and student counseling. Prior to working for Tarrant County College District, Herrera also worked as an academic advisor for the Southwestern Community College at Iowa, where he coordinated and advised students with special needs.

In addition, Herrera served the state of Washington as a social worker, providing family crisis counseling and foster care supervision. He also worked as a school counselor for the Union Gap School District, the Wahluke School District, and the Renville School District.

“I am excited to be working as an instructor for the School of Education,” said Herrera. “I feel that my extensive background in human services will serve as an asset to the students who choose to work in this field.”

Herrera received his bachelor’s degree from Warner Pacific College and his master’s degree from Heritage University. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree from North Central University.
