NMC-CREES to hold Artificial Swine Insemination Workshop on Tinian Friday, April 9 (April 8, 2010)

The Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research Extension and Education Services (CREES) is inviting the public to a workshop aimed at increasing awareness of artificial insemination. The workshop will start Friday, April 9th and will continue on to the 10th at the NMC Tinian campus from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in room F.

Participants of the workshop will have the privilege of learning about equipments and different techniques used for artificial insemination of pigs, the advantages and disadvantages swine insemination, commonly used practices of artificial insemination in the US mainland, heat detection and timing of insemination, semen handling procedures, and broad overview about the various facilities that conduct research on the science of insemination.

Organizers of the event two distinct guest speakers: Dr. Allan Sabaldica, an animal scientist, and Captain Ernest Torres, a certified cattle and swine artificial insemination technician.

According to Dr. Sabaldica, artificial insemination can improve swine genetics in the Marianas which, in turn, will improve quality and marketability of meats in the region.

The workshop was funded by a grant from United States Department of Agriculture’s Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.
