NMC Board of Regents Announce Scholarship Recipients (March 23, 2010)

The Northern Marianas College has announced its recipients of the Board of Regents Scholarship, which is designed to provide financial aid for students pursuing their bachelor’s degree in education at the College.

Recipients of the scholarships include Meena Benavente, Desiree Masga, Jan Michael Reyes, Livia Pangelinan, Ashley Sikayun, and Juana Atalig.

“My fellow Regents and I are extremely proud of the initiative these students have taken in applying for the scholarship and meeting all the application requirements,” said NMC Regent Paz C. Younis.

Recipients of the scholarships will receive $500.00 per semester for up to eight semesters or up to the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever is sooner.

Sikayun and Pangelinan completed all requirements for their bachelor’s degree in education at the College this past Fall 2009 semester and are currently teachers in the Public School System. They received $500.00 each to offset the costs of the past semester. The other four recipients are current students pursuing their bachelor’s degree in education at NMC.

The selections were based on merit and financial need, and scholarships were awarded on the candidates’ community involvement, academic backgrounds, letters of recommendation, and written essays.

“We look forward to following their success along their paths to becoming future educators and educational leaders in the CNMI,” added Younis.

The scholarship aims to 1) promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers; 2) help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI; and, 3) provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, and enhance their career and professional development.

In December last year, the NMC Foundation, the fundraising arm of the College, awarded six scholarships to students pursuing an associate’s degree at NMC.
