NMC CREES Announces Its Second Agriculture Summit (March 2, 2010)

In collaboration with Department of Lands and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the Saipan and the Northern Islands Municipal Council the Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research, Education, and Extension Service (NMC-CREES) will be hosting its second agriculture summit aimed at helping farmers and ranchers find ways to conserve and preserve our environment and provide information about the current agriculture market climate and opportunities for growth.

The three organizations that are better known as the CNMI Farm Support Group created a partnership in response to the growing need for a collective action to sustain the CNMI agriculture industry and study ways to help revive areas of weakness.

The event will cover lectures on the following farm-related issues: pest management, agriculture workforce upon federalization of immigration, product exports, government regulations, alternative farming, military assistance in the industry’s developmental phase and the creation of a farming cooperative group.

Organizers of the event will ask participants to actively engage in panel discussions and allow time for questions and answers during the event.

CNMI leaders and experts in the industry will also participate as panelists to cover areas of farm equipment, water supply and water rates, local business tax credit opportunities and post-harvest strategies. There will also be highlights on issues of co-op program on Rota and Tinian’s Cattleman’s Association concerns.

“We would like to encourage our participants to take advantage of this event and the information that will be presented to them,” said NMC Interim President “We would like to thank the CNMI Farmer Support Group for organizing this great summit for our local farmers and ranchers.”

The summit will take place Wednesday, March 3rd from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Lao Lao Bay Resort. The event will be aired live to audiences on Tinian and Rota at their respective NMC instructional sites.
