NMC Upward Bound Celebrates TRIO Day (February 4, 2010)

The Northern Marianas College Upward Bound Program will be inviting students, alumni, parents and leaders of the CNMI to join in the celebration of National TRIO Day which will take place end of this month.

In the mid 1980s, Congress passed a resolution to assign the celebration of National TRIO Day on every last Saturday of the month of February. The resolution was to help recognize the needs of disadvantaged individuals and adults aspiring to improve their quality of lives through education and training.

The TRIO program coordinators assist eligible students to successfully attain a bachelor’s degree (in their field of choice). The program provides various services such as tutoring, personal and career counseling, academic workshops, financial aid workshops and time management seminars. The facility at the NMC Upward Bound provides useful resources such as computers (with Internet academic access and office softwares), desks, working chairs, a comfortable study environment and reading materials to help in better understanding student options offered at Upward Bound.

TRIO Day also helps to remind the community by way of volunteerism. This year, Upward Bound participants will be volunteering at Triple J Superfresh Market on Saturday, February 27th from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. The volunteers will be assisting employees of Triple J as celebrity baggers.

“The TRIO programs have been making significant impact in the lives of many students,” said NMC Acting Interim President Dr. Patrick Moran. “TRIO day is an important opportunity to celebrate the successes of the program, as well as to get the community acquainted with the free services available to help students succeed.”

The TRIO Day Open House will take place on Thursday, February 18th at the NMC Building J starting at 4:00 pm.

For more information on the upcoming TRIO Day, please contact NMC Upward Bound at 234-5498 ext. 1278 or visit their office at the NMC As Terlaje campus.
