NMC’s Student Government Looks Ahead (January 21, 2010)

Aside from other positive developments at the Northern Marianas College (NMC), including the increase in enrollment numbers from last spring semester, the College has a jewel that continues to flourish. The Associated Students of the Northern Marianas College (ASNMC), the College’s student governance body that was first established back in 1986, developed a mission to promote higher education, represent student rights, and advocate student needs and concerns.

The current goals of ASNMC have not changed. It continues to help prepare students at NMC to become responsible citizens by providing educational and social experiences and continues to serve as the unifying force of all student activities. According ASNMC President Miles Rodriguez, the goals for calendar year 2010 will be filled with exciting activities that will keep students busy. Some of the events lined up include Charter Day, Health Awareness Fair, Spring Kickoff Bash, Student Assemblies, Leadership Conferences, and the Graduation Celebration, to name a few.

“We are looking forward to another exciting year and a complete agenda,” said Rodriguez. “We are also inviting those who have not enlisted as members to join our organization as volunteers.”

Officers of ASNMC include President Rodriguez, Daniel Kintol (Vice President), Stacey Demapan (Secretary) and Mindy Park (Treasurer). They are responsible for the organization of student meetings and student assemblies. According to Rodriguez, the organization conducts meetings on a monthly basis at the NMC Student Center. The goals of the meetings are not only to improve communication with students and enhance leadership skills, but also plan out activities that everyone can enjoy.

“Miles and the rest of ASNMC Officers make us all very proud. They have been a great contributor in our efforts for continuous improvements of academic programs and college activities. I hope that more students will find time to assist with upcoming activities,” said NMC Interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera.

ASNMC currently has many volunteers throughout the semester. They expect this number to grow in the calendar year as more students express interest in the organization.
