Building M Construction at NMC Progresses (March 6, 2008)

Renovations at the Northern Marianas College’s Building M will soon enable students and staff to enjoy access to eighteen offices, two classrooms, a conference room, and an administrative office.

The building first served as a warehouse for the Public School System for the cafeteria in the next-door Building J. After PSS moved out, a section of the building housed the office of Technical Programs and the office of Marine Technology. After the construction of Building V in 1992, the office of Technical Programs moved out of Building M, and the office of Marine Technology remained. However, six to eight years down the road, the program shut down; and the building served as a storage facility for the college.

At one point in time, the building served as the students’ center for basketball games and ping pong tournaments. However, due to leaks in the structure, NMC ordered that all activities cease, and requested that CUC disconnect the power supply to the building.

It wasn’t until last year that NMC formulated plans to renovate the building, which will also be the first step in the College’s mission in rebuilding its infrastructure to meet compliance with the federal requirements mandated by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
