NMC Names New Librarian (December 15, 2009)

The Northern Marianas College has appointed a new Academic Librarian to assist students, faculty, staff and community members with their research and information needs and to maintain the Olympio T. Borja Memorial Library and its collections.

Adnan Raza, who possesses a Juris Doctor and a Master of Library and Information Science, began his employment at the College last month.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Adnan to the NMC team,” said NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “His wealth of experience and his extensive educational background will be an asset to the College and its students.”

Before becoming the Academic Librarian at the College, Raza worked as the Director of the Learning Resource Center at IIA College in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In this capacity, Raza provided specialized reference assistance using an array of comprehensive databases including Academic Search Premier, Business Source Elite, CINAHL, Lexis Nexis, and Westlaw, along with scores of open access databases covering various fields. He also designed and taught workshops in database searching and information technology literacy.

While in Albuquerque, Raza also worked as a Substitute Librarian for the Albuquerque / Bernalillo County Library, where he managed all aspects of library operations including circulation and reference duties at various branches. He has also been a Library Researcher at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he collaborated with professors and doctoral candidates to carry out library research in ethno-botany. His other work experience includes working as a Research Analyst for Community Mediation of Baltimore County in Towson, Maryland, and a Legal Researcher for the Law Offices of Yoko Higuchi in Los Angeles, CA. Raza was also employed as Assistant Program Director for the Los Angeles Center for Education Research, and the Manager of Legal Affairs for Cobian GmbH in San Francisco.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to move to the Marianas and to work for the Northern Marianas College,” said Raza. “I look forward to strengthening the College library’s role in helping students succeed in their academic training.”

Raza’s computer experience includes a mastery of Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, and the creation of web portals, electronic pathfinders, and webliographies; a proficiency in database searching; and an in-depth practical and theoretical understanding of issues relating to the processing, storage, retrieval, dissemination, and evaluation of electronic media including digital copyright and Digital Rights Management (DRM). Raza also has a special interest in digital libraries and took five graduate-level information technology courses during his Master's program.

He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, his Master’s degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Irvine. He is a member of the American Library Association and Association of College and Research Libraries.
