NMC Board of Regents Announce Scholarship Program for Education Majors (August 4, 2009)

The Northern Marianas College Board of Regents today announced the availability of a scholarship program designed to provide students who are pursuing their bachelor’s degree in education at the College.

“We are extremely pleased to be offering these scholarships in time for the Fall 2009 semester,” said Charles Cepeda, chairperson of the NMC Board of Regents. “The scholarship program that the Regents approved will help identify and encourage the next generation of educators and educational leaders.”

The scholarship aims to 1) promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers; 2) help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI; and, 3) provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, and enhance their career and professional development.

“We strongly encourage all students to apply and take advantage of this scholarship opportunity,” added Cepeda.

The scholarships are based on merit and financial need and will be awarded on the candidate’s community involvement, academic background, letters of recommendation, and a written essay. An interview may also be required.

Recipients of the scholarship will receive up to $500.00 per semester for up to eight semesters or up to the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever is sooner.

To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen (or green card holder) and a CNMI resident for the past three years; be accepted and enrolled as a full-time student at NMC; have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better; and, be able to demonstrate financial need.

If selected to receive the scholarship, the applicant must also sign an agreement stating that he or she will work in the Commonwealth after graduating from the Northern Marianas College for a period twice as long as the period for which the applicant received the NMC Board of Regents Scholarship.

The deadline for submitting applications to the NMC Financial Aid Office is August 21, 2009. Applications and additional information can be downloaded from www.nmcnet.edu or contact NMC’s Financial Aid Office at 234-5498 extension 1527.
