NMC Library Rededication Today (April 10, 2008)

To commemorate the 27th year of serving as an invaluable resource to students and community members (and twenty years since the initial dedication), the Northern Marianas College will be hosting a rededication ceremony for the Olympio T. Borja Memorial Library today (Friday, April 11, 2008).

The library was originally dedicated to the late Senator Borja on December 4, 1987, at an event that included then Lt. Governor Pedro A. Tenorio and then College President Agnes Mc Phetres, who were joined by the Mr. Borja’s wife, Carmen Borja. At this time, the library contained approximately 12,000 volumes of books and other materials.

Today, the Olympio T. Borja Memorial Library is equipped with a mission to “provide both resources and an environment that enhances and encourages the college’s academic and community-based programs.” The facility also serves as NMC’s main library center and boasts nearly 40,000 items, including books, periodicals, and AV materials. It is complemented by the Pacific Collection, the CNMI Archives, and the Curriculum Resource Center, which is an education library held in partnership with the School of Education.

“The library has played an integral part in the educational and professional growth of NMC students and others in the community,” said NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “We plan to expand that role by aggressively seeking funding sources that will pay for expanded state-of-the-art equipment and other materials that will enhance the CNMI community’s library experience.”

A well-known former senator, Borja was elected to the Saipan Municipal Legislature from 1956 to 1963. He was acting mayor of Saipan in 1962, and was appointed an associated judge for the Mariana Island District Course in 1962 to 1963. He was eventually elected as a delegate to the Congress of Micronesia in 1965.

Today’s rededication ceremony will include remarks from Herbert Del Rosario, Acting Director for Library Programs and Services; Dr. Fernandez; Agnes McPhetres, Board of Regent member; and Frances L.G. Borja, daughter of the late Olympio T. Borja.
