NMC Staff Complete Advanced Computer Networking Training (December 18, 2008)

Information Technology staff members at the Northern Marianas College recently completed a training designed to enhance their ability to manage and maintain computer networks.

Entitled “Cisco Boot Camp,” the training is part of the College’s overall effort to continuously build staff capacity to improve service to students, faculty, and staff. It also provides all the IT staff with the knowledge and skills to prepare for the Cisco certification exam, which will be taken sometime next month.

“The training allows our staff to become proficient in managing our IT infrastructure,” said Adrian Atalig, NMC IT Director. “In this information age, we want to ensure that NMC is at the forefront of technology.”

The industry-recognized certification called Cisco Certified Network Associate credentials ensures that the NMC IT staff has the ability, knowledge, and skills to install and configure Cisco switches and routers in local and wide-area networks using various platforms. The certification also validates the ability to mitigate security threats to NMC’s computer network.

The five-day training included the following topics: describing the network infrastructure; configuring, verifying, and troubleshooting a switch with VLANs and interswitch communications; implementing an IP addressing scheme and IP services to meet network requirements in a medium-size enterprise branch office network; configuring basic router operation and routing on Cisco devices; and identifying security threats to a network and describing general methods to mitigate those threats.
