NMC Hires New Science Instructor (March 9, 2011)

The Northern Marianas recently hired Florita Cabanes to teach various science disciplines at the College. The newly hired instructor started teaching during the Spring 2011 semester.

“The growing interest in NMC’s nursing and natural resources management programs have created a need for more science instructors,” said NMC Interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera. “We are very pleased to welcome another qualified instructor to the College.”

“The first time I set foot in my classes at NMC I felt very excited and joyful seeing these new students welcome me,” said Cabanes. “The transition was also made easier by my fellow faculty members who have been very accommodating and cheerful.”

Before starting at NMC, Cabanes was a seventh to eleventh grade science teacher at Eucon International School for eight years. She also served as an assistant professor at the institution’s college division and assisted teaching various courses including biology, earth science, teaching science, and child growth and adolescent development.

Cabanes also has extensive experience as a science educator at other institutions including Cagayan de Oro College of Nursing and Xavier University, also known as Ateneo de Cagayan of the Philippines. She has also worked as a trainer to assist those teaching science at the elementary and secondary education level.

“Before I fell in love with science, I actually struggled as a student to study and learn it,” said Cabanes. “I think my previous struggles have helped me understand each student’s learning needs and how to work with their unique attitudes towards learning.”

Cabanes has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Teaching Biology from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines. She has also passed national teaching certification examinations, the Praxis I and Praxis II in Biology Content Knowledge.
