NMC Names New School of Education Director (January 31, 2011)

The Northern Marianas College recently named Dr. Joseph M. Peters as director of the School of Education (SOE). He will oversee the operations of the department, ensuring that it continues to provide quality education to students.

The NMC School of Education offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with concentrations in Special Education, Rehabilitation and Human Services, Elementary Education, and Early Childhood Education.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Peters to the Northern Marianas College,” said Interim President Lorraine Cabrera. “His academic background, coupled with his extensive experience, will prove valuable to the School of Education.”

Prior to starting at NMC, Peters worked as a professor for the School of Education at the University of West Florida. Before that, he worked as an Associate Dean of the College of Professional Studies at the same university. Peters handled various duties including college program development, development of doctoral policies, and oversight on college webpage development.

Additionally, Peters served as Chair of the School of Education at the University of West Florida before assuming the role of Associate Dean. As Chair, he led a large faculty and managed the department budget. Peters has also been involved with various research and scholarly activities, such as being Editor Emeritus for an educational journal and publishing a variety of college textbooks pertaining to teaching science in the elementary level.

“I am honored to be leading and serving the School of Education at NMC,” said Peters. “I look forward to strengthening the department by ensuring that it provides programs that serve the needs of its students.”

Peters graduated Summa Cum Laude when he received his Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. He then pursued two Master of Education degrees, one in Natural Sciences and the other in Environmental Education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Gannon University in the same city. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
