NMC-CREES Sets Workshop on Pest Identification (October 21, 2010)

The Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service program will be hosting a workshop geared toward educating the public, especially local farmers, about different pests and how to control these pests.

The Pest Identification workshop is designed to help participants learn more about insect pests, plant diseases, and other types of destructive pests, such as rodents, snails, and slugs. The workshop also teaches participants various methods on how to control these different pests including the use of neem leaf extract, which the NMC-CREES Entomology Department has developed into an effective and environmentally safe pesticide.

The workshop will also feature presentations from NMC-CREES entomologist-nematologist Dr. Marisol Quitanilla, plant pathologist Dr. Dilip Nandwani, agriculture consultant Isidoro “Sid” Cabrera, integrated pest management coordinator Alejandro Badilles, and pesticide safety education coordinator and agriculture research agent Arnold Route.

The Pest Identification workshop, which requires no registration or participation fee, will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at the Saipan Grand Hotel from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

To register or for more information, contact the NMC-CREES Entomology Office at 234-5498 ext. 1432, or Isidoro “Sid” Cabrera at 788-9693.
