New Student Leaders Elected (September 27, 2010)

Students at the Northern Marianas College took to the polls earlier this week to elect their leaders for the new academic year. The following were elected to preside as officers of the Associated Students of NMC, the representative body for all NMC students:

President: Mr. Antonio V. Tiples, IV, Liberal Arts Major
Vice President: Ms. Maria B. Calilong, Liberal Arts Major
Secretary: Mr. Ian Carr, Criminal Justice Major
Treasurer: Ms. Ki Young Kim, Nursing Major

The election of officers was held on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at NMC’s student center. The investiture ceremony was held on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010 at 10am in Room D1.

In accordance with its constitution, the purpose of ASNMC is: 1) to prepare students of NMC to take their places as responsible citizens in a democracy by providing educational, social, recreational, and cultural experiences; 2) to promote the unity of purpose and fellowship among the students of NMC; 3) to serve as the focus and unifying force of all student activities and to support campus organizations; 4) to develop individual leadership qualities by encouraging participation in College and community governance and student organizations; and 5) to provide for the welfare of the students of NMC.

“We are proud of the newly-elected officers and congratulate them on their election,” said Interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera. “The ASNMC leaders play an important role on many levels at the College. We look forward to working with them as we continue to advance the College’s mission.”

“Though helping lead a student body of college students would be a new challenge, I look forward to the opportunity to learn and experience all the obstacles to come,” said new ASNMC president Antonio Tiples.

In prior years, officers of ASNMC have actively participated in the planning of major college events, including Charter Day, NMC’s largest annual event. They have also organized forums that include debates among political candidates seeking public office.

ASNMC officers are also members of the College's governance structure: ASNMC has representatives to the Board of Regents, College Council, the Planning, Program Review, and Outcomes Assessment Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee, the Recruitment Team, Graduation Committee, and other groups.
