House Resolution Commends NMC’s Accreditation Efforts (October 30, 2008)

Members of the Sixteenth House of Representatives recently passed a resolution extolling the College for efforts undertaken to comply with accreditation requirements.

Entitled “A House Resolution commending the Northern Marianas College on working diligently in addressing concerns under the ”Show Cause Accreditation’ status given by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges,” House Resolution No. 16-57 recognizes the efforts of NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez, students, staff, faculty, and members of the NMC Board of Regents in meeting accreditation standards.

“We are deeply appreciative of the House of Representatives’ resolution,” said Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “At the same time, the members of the House of Representatives should themselves be commended for their unwavering support of the College.”

“They”together with Governor Benigno Fitial, Washington Representative Pete Tenorio, and other Commonwealth leaders”have formed the bedrock of support that has sustained us in the last several months,” added President Fernandez.

The resolution acknowledges that despite its efforts and attempts at excellence, the College has had to confront many challenges because of the current economic crisis facing the Commonwealth.

It also states that “the Northern Marianas College continues to work with limited funding, pulling together its staff and resources, working countless hours to address the concerns from WASC and ultimately towards full accreditation.”

Representatives Ralph Torres, David Apatang, and Victor Hocog introduced the resolution in the House.
