NMC Service Learning Program Increases Number of Community Agency Partnerships (April 22, 2010)

A program at the Northern Marianas College that seeks to fuse academic instruction with community service and internship has witnessed a recent increase in the number of agencies and business participating in its service offerings.

Each semester, the NMC Career Center’s Service Learning Program (SLP) affords students the opportunity to work on community projects or participate in community service programs relating to their course instruction.

The Public School System, Coastal Resource Management, and Division of Youth Services’ (DYS) Youth Development Program have participated in Service Learning Program at NMC for the past few semesters. Joining them are the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance, the Pacific Marine Resource Institute, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, and NMC’s Information Systems Office.

“We deeply appreciate the partnerships we continue to maintain and the partnerships we have newly formed with agencies and organizations in the community,” said NMC Career Center program manager Heather Santos. “Through the assistance and services they provide, we are able to ensure that NMC students are given a rewarding education and professional experience.”

In the program, students are required to perform at least 20 hours of direct service per semester. At the end of each semester, students top their experiences off with community presentations through various forms of media, such as mini movies, power points presentations, poster, brochures, pamphlets, and articles.

For more information on how to become a community partner in the Service Learning Program, please contact Heather Santos at 234-5498 ext. 1348 or e-mail [email protected].
