NMC Grazing Academy Workshop on Saipan (January 22, 2010)

A three-day workshop by the Northern Marianas College’s Marianas Grazing Academy will be held on February 3-5, 2010, at Room D-1 at the College’s As Terlaje campus. The Academy is aimed at building local agricultural capacity and educating farmers and ranchers about increasing the economic viability of their products.

The workshops, which require no registration or participation fee, will include training on pasture and livestock management issues, including soil management, forage production, grazing management planning, weed control, forage selection, animal health and treatment practices, fecal analyses for parasitic infection, and meat quality and marketing.

The Academy, a project organized through a collaborative effort between the NMC Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service (CREES) and experienced pasture, livestock, and soil specialists from the University of Hawaii, University of the Virgin Islands, and the University of Guam, seeks to enhance the production of high quality meat products, which can serve to improve food sustainability through the adoption of appropriate technologies and practices in grazing and livestock management.

The Academy also seeks to provide local farmers, ranchers, technical resource personnel and other interagency collaborators with assistance and guidance in planning and developing special local projects to improve the economic viability of grazing activities in the CNMI.

The third day of the workshop will feature a pasture walk, where participants will be able to evaluate pasture conditions, monitor grazing and forage productions, and estimate stocking rates. Demonstrations and trainings will also be conducted on various concepts, such as herbicide treatment, field fecal examinations, and forage seed preparation and selection.

To register for the workshop, please contact Dr. Allan Sabaldica at 433-2576 or Lawrence Duponcheel at 433-0639.

The Marianas Grazing Academy project has been made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, CSREES Outreach for Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers (OASDFR).
