Another Record Turnout at ABE Summer Orientation (June 18, 2009)

Approximately 93 students participated in the recent Summer Orientation for the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, a program under the Northern Marianas College’s Division of Community Programs and Services. The record turnout was attributed to the 257 students currently registered for ABE’s summer courses.

Adult Basic Education state director and GED administrator Lorraine Cabrera provided information about the different ABE programs that include the Adult School, General Education Diploma, English as a Second Language, and Family Literacy. She also dispensed some key advice to help the students succeed in the ABE program and encouraged them to further their education with NMC.

The orientation also provided students with updates and information about the various programs and services offered on campus that the students can benefit from. Other campus services were highlighted by Manny Castro from the Office of Admission and Records, Daisy Manglona-Propst of the Financial Aid Office, and Heather Santos of Career Services. The ABE Office also reports that with an Adult High School Diploma students can benefit from Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA).

The evening’s keynote speaker, Cynthia Deleon Guerrero, director of NMC School of Education, shared her experiences as a GED graduate and encouraged students to pursue their educational goals despite obstacles they may encounter.

ABE registration and placement testing will continue until June 30. Interested students can contact the ABE office for more information at 234-3690 Ext. 1723, 1721 or 1724. Classes will begin on July 1.

The ABE Office is also seeking highly motivated individuals with some experience in teaching adult learners reading and writing, as well all other content area courses for both morning and afternoon sessions.

Applications are available at www.nmcnet.edu. Interested Adjunct applicants are advised to submit a complete application to the NMC Human Resource Office located in Building P. For additional information, contact NMC Human Resource Office at 234-5498 Ext. 1016.
