NMC Instructor Awarded International ESL Teacher’s Certification (October 6, 2009)

Northern Marianas College instructor Constantine “Dean” Papadopoulus, Ph.D., was recently awarded a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) by the University of Cambridge’s English for Speakers of Other Languages program. The CELTA is an internationally recognized credential offered through courses at the United Kingdom-based university.

The CELTA course is specially designed to expose participants to a variety of practical skills required of teachers of English to foreign students. It afforded participants an opportunity to deploy teaching practices in front of an actual audience. As a course assessment requirement, participants were given writing assignments focusing on adult learning, the English language system, language skills, and classroom teaching.

“Dr. Papadopoulos’s achievement brings great honor and prestige to the College community,” said NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “His certification will surely enhance the College’s efforts to provide a first-rate education to both resident and foreign students.”

Papadopoulus, who attended the certification course over the past summer, is an instructor at the college’s Language and Humanities Department. He has also written many periodicals focused on the effects and benefits of culture in education. His articles have been published in local and regional publications.
