NMC to welcome students back (February 19, 2019)

The Northern Marianas College would be welcoming back its students to the As Terlaje campus tomorrow, about four months after Super Typhoon Yutu damaged most of its buildings.

NMC interim president Frankie Eliptico told Saipan Tribune yesterday that they would be giving away burgers, hotdogs, and other snacks for their students who will be returning for morning classes tomorrow, Feb. 20, 2019.

There will be no formal rites tomorrow for the resumption of morning classes. However, one would be done in the future, Eliptico said, adding that members of the CNMI Legislature have been invited, along with Federal Emergency Management Agency and Army Corps of Engineers representatives.

“This is a very important day for us because the students would be coming back to the As Terlaje campus for the first time since Super Typhoon Yutu, so the day carries a lot of meaning with it,” he said.

“It is a very informal, organic event to welcome back our students. We will be having a more formal event much later.”

Twenty-two of NMC’s 27 on-campus buildings sustained severe damage while only two of the 37 available classrooms survived the super typhoon in late October 2018.

Currently, Eliptico added that there are about 1,250 students attending the college.

Along with food, which Eliptico noted would be distributed from 11am to 1pm, school supplies would also be given away tomorrow.
