Marianas Variety: NMC student completes CHCC internship (August 28, 2018)

FOR Northern Marianas College student Eloise Lopez, an internship at the Commonwealth Healthcare Center is preparation for her future role as an educator of children.

Lopez was a summer intern at CHCC’s Maternal Child Health Bureau from June 25 to Aug. 17.

During her internship, she said she gained valuable information about programs that promote health and wellness for children. “I can help spread the word to the community about the available programs that benefit children,” she added.

As an intern, Lopez, who is majoring in education with an emphasis on elementary education, helped prepare newborn packets for mothers who recently gave birth.

“We want mothers to know what they can do to ensure the well-being of their babies. I also did ASQ calls, or ages and stages questionnaires. I followed up on parents’ appointments to find out what hospital services were provided to them and how we could improve those services. We also checked on the children’s development.”

Lopez said she may be majoring in education, but she also wants to learn about public health.

“Even if I am a soon-to-be educator, there will always be opportunities to be part of the healthcare system. If we are passionate about making a difference in our community, there’s always a possibility.”

Through her internship, Lopez said she learned about the issues critical to children and to their parents and guardians.

“Discussions about staying healthy and fit are not enough. The best way to educate the children is through organizing physical activities with the participation of families,” she added.

Lopez expressed high regard for the Maternal Child Health Bureau staff she worked with. “They make sure that community gets the services it needs. I was glad to be part of the team even if it was for a short while.”
