Marianas Variety: NMC eyes partnership with trade school (June 27, 2018)

NORTHERN Marianas College President Carmen Fernandez said they can partner with the Northern Marianas Trades Institute in helping middle school students make career choices.

Fernandez said NMC is also working with the Public School System to achieve the same goal. “We can help middle school students with career choices so, by the time they go to high school, they already know what job they want.”

She said the talks between NMC and PSS are still in the early stage, and there is still a need to develop an action plan for the career pathways they are proposing.

“We offer PSS career assessment for the middle school students to see what they are strong in, and then we can help them go in that direction. We want to help the kids in middle school determine what they want.”

NMC is focused on academic and professional careers, she said, but if a student is interested in vocational or technical trades, they can help them in that direction through NMTI.

“We want to support the kids who want learn about the trades. If NMTI continues to offer construction, technical and other trades, we will send them the students for training,” Fernandez said.

To provide more training opportunities, she said they can help NMTI apply for workforce grants.

“There is a possibility of partnering and helping NMTI get grants. We will identify the funding sources that will allow the kids to go to these programs, graduate and get a job.

“I think NMTI already has an agreement in place, but what we want to see is NMC and PSS working closely to make it easier for students to identify what they want to do early on, and for us to help them achieve those goals so that they will be ready to join the workforce,” Fernandez said.
