Marianas Variety: NMC gym project may break ground before end of year (February 14, 2018)

The construction of Northern Marianas College’s state-of-the-art gymnasium is moving forward and will be “up for bids” soon, NMC President Carmen Fernandez said.

In an interview last week at the Saipan Chamber of Commerce general membership meeting where she spoke about NMC programs and projects, she said: “As soon as we get the architectural and engineering design done we can solicit bids. Once we get a contractor we can do the groundbreaking ceremony.” She said it could be a “very lengthy process, but hopefully, we can finish it in two to three months and look forward to a groundbreaking before the end of this year.”

Fernandez said the problem they are anticipating is not having enough construction manpower for the project. “That’s the biggest worry,” she added. The gym will cost $4.6 million and will be funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It can accommodate up to 2,000 people and can be used as an emergency shelter in case of a calamity.

“That’s one of the reasons FEMA is very happy about this project,” Fernandez said. “It will have a backup generator and 24-hour water and power supplies. So it can also be used as a command post or emergency center because of its capacity and solar energy source.” In addition, the gym will have ample parking space, she added.
