To help expand higher education opportunities for CNMI students, the Northern Marianas Insurance Association recently awarded $1,000 in scholarship funds to Northern Marianas College students. This is the association’s second year to award the scholarships.

The purpose of the Northern Marianas Insurance Association Scholarship is threefold: 1) To promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers; 2) to help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI; and, 3) to provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, and enhance their career and professional development.

The students who were selected to receive the NMIA scholarship are Chrystalle Lloren and Michael Santos. Both students had undergone a highly competitive application process that included an essay and panel interview.

Chrystalle Lloren is a first-year student who is working toward earning a degree in business management. She is also a recipient of the Tan Siu Lin Foundation scholarship.

Michael Santos is a second-year liberal arts student and will be graduating with his associate degree in liberal arts in May. He is also a recipient of the Tan Siu Lin Foundation scholarship. After graduation, Michael will be transferring to Portland State University to pursue his bachelor’s degree in public health through PSU’s pre-med program.

“We are extremely grateful for the support from the Northern Marianas Insurance Association, who is providing this scholarship for the second year in a row,” said NMC President, Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “We look forward to working with them to help ensure that financial and academic opportunities are expanding for our students.”

The Northern Marianas Insurance Association is an association of insurance companies whose purpose is to protect the rights of its members for the benefit of the consumer through education, information, networking and active participation in the political environment and community service. As part of its expanded purposes, the organization also carries out not-for-profit activities that contribute to the betterment of the CNMI socially, economically, politically and culturally consistent with the laws of CNMI and Bylaws.

The scholarships were awarded based on the content of each student's written essay and an interview process.

The selection committee was composed of representatives from Northern Marianas Insurance Association and Northern Marianas College.
