Marianas Variety: Senate confirms NMC, CUC board nominees (July 12, 2017)

THE Senate has confirmed the nominations of Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board member Weston Thomas Deleon Guerrero, and Northern Marianas College regents Zenie P. Mafnas and Charles Cepeda.

All three were confirmed unanimously by the nine senators during a special session on Tuesday.

Sens. Teresita Santos and Justo Quitugua commended the governor for appointing the three appointees and thanked them for accepting the nominations.

Santos asked Deleon Guerrero to uphold his duties and responsibilities and to serve the people well.

Quitugua, for his part, asked Deleon Guerrero to look into CUC’s current rules and regulations.

The senator said studies done by CUC should be reviewed by the board and serve as a guide to management.

Quitugua said the ongoing training for power plant jobs should also continue in anticipation of the end of the CW program in Dec. 2019.

The senators asked Mafnas and Cepeda to revisit some of NMC’s programs and determine if they can be improved further.

At the same time, the Senate deferred action on the appointment of Department of Corrections acting Commissioner Vince Attao.

He was supposed to be confirmed on Tuesday, but he was still off island so the senators decided not to act on his appointment yet.
