500 Attend NMC’s Cash for College (June 20 2016)

About 500 college or college-bound students attended Northern Marianas College’s Cash for College this past Saturday, one of the highest participation rates since NMC began hosting the event several years ago.

“We are very pleased with the great turn out for the Cash for College workshop this past Saturday,” said NMC Interim President David J. Attao. “It was rewarding to see many students take advantage of this opportunity to see what financial aid opportunities are available and how to maximize and apply for them.”

The purpose of the free workshop was to assist students and their parents maximize scholarship opportunities. At the event, staff members and community volunteers provided free, one-on-one financial aid assistance to the participants, many of who were recent graduates of Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, and Kagman High School.

“I want to thank NMC Financial Aid Director Daisy Propst for leading the event and making sure it was well organized,” added Attao. “We are also appreciative of all the volunteers from NMC, CNMI Scholarship, and Saipan SHEFA, as well as community volunteers for helping our students.”

At the workshop, participants received assistance in completing college financial aid forms for the various federal and local scholarships and grants including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Saipan Higher Education Financial Aid (SHEFA), and the CNMI Scholarship. They also received free notary and copying services.

Students who missed the recent Cash for College workshop and need assistance with their financial aid can visit NMC’s Financial Aid Office in Room N-1-1 at the As Terlaje campus (M-F: 8am-4:30pm) or contact the office at (670) 237-6791.

The free Cash for College workshop is made possible through financial support from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Access Challenge Grant program.
