NMC Organizes Workforce Readiness Training for Individuals with Disabilities (April 15, 2015)

The Northern Marianas College University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) recently partnered with key agencies in the CNMI to provide training activities to enhance the workforce skills of individuals with disabilities.

The training included computer and leadership development skills activities that were held at the NMC campus in As Terlaje. Similar workforce readiness training activities will be held in Rota later this month.

“We had about 20 individuals with disabilities who participated in the workforce readiness training sessions,” said Floyd Masga, UCEDD Director at NMC. “We are looking forward to engaging more participants as plans for more training activities are being planned.”

The training activities are made possible through the collaboration between NMC’s UCEDD program and the Council on Developmental Disabilities, Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy System Inc. (NMPASI), the Center for Living Independently, the Public School System, and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

“The partnership between NMC’s UCEDD program and the other agencies involved in assisting individuals with disabilities has been key to making these workforce readiness activities possible,” added Masga.

The NMC UCEDD Program is committed to the development of culturally complimentary outcomes while promoting equal opportunity, independence, productivity, promoting self-determination, and supporting an improved quality of life for people with developmental disabilities in their villages and throughout the Commonwealth.

The training activities were held as part of the Disabilities Awareness Month in March.

Last month Masga and David Attao, NMC’s Dean of Administration and Resource Development, led a discussion on the efforts and services that are provided in the Marianas to promote independence for individuals with developmental disabilities. Their presentation was made at the 2015 UCEDD Directors’ Retreat and Technical Assistance Institute in Washington, D.C.
