NMC Fills Instructor Vacancies (September 9, 2013)

The Northern Marianas College has announced that it has filled the vacant instructor positions necessitated by its implementation of the Board of Regent’s new policy on minimum faculty degree requirements.

“We are pleased to announce that instructors have been secured for all of the courses and sections that were rescheduled to start later this month on September 16,” according to NMC President Dr. Sharon Y. Hart.

“Through a combination of new full-time faculty and adjunct instructors we have retained instructors that meet or exceed the minimum requirements established by the NMC Board of Regents,” said Dean of Academic Programs and Services, Barbara Merfalen.

Merfalen stated, “We are delighted at the unprecedented level of interest received in response to our recruitment efforts. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our Human Resources Office, and specifically Nadia Camacho, our Personnel Specialist responsible for recruitment. If it wasn’t for Nadia’s aggressive recruiting activities we would not be able to report on this success.”

According to Merfalen, the College has hired full time faculty in our Business, Language and Humanities, and Science Health Math & Athletics departments, and have filled in around the edges with qualified adjunct instructors as well.

“The College appreciates the flexibility shown by some of our affected faculty to step up to the plate and teach in disciplines supported by their academic credentials,” said Hart. “ We especially want to recognize those who have already begun to take the coursework necessary to return to their chosen specialties. They have truly shown a commitment to both the College, and most importantly to our students.”

“This accomplishment is a significant step towards reaffirmation of Northern Marianas College’s accreditation, as it signifies our commitment to assurance of integrity and quality of our programs and services,” Hart added. “NMC’s Academic Leadership Team should be commended for their tireless efforts to restructure their departments as necessary to ensure that we are in compliance with these new qualification requirements that truly reflect national norms in academia.”

The policy on minimum faculty qualifications was adopted in response to the recommendations made by the External Evaluation Team of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) that visited the Northern Marianas College last October.

In its report, the Evaluation Team recommended: “To meet the Standards and assure the integrity and quality of programs and services, the team recommends that the College develop, and consistently apply, clear criteria in determining qualifications for faculty.”

This recommendation was restated in the February 11, 2013 Action Letter signed by Dr. Barbara Beno, ACCJC president.
