NMC Prepares for Accreditation Visit (August 28, 2013)

As part of its accreditation efforts, the Northern Marianas College this week is undergoing a “mock visit” which is aimed at preparing the College community for the accreditation team visit that will occur the week of October 21, directly after the submission of NMC’s Show Cause Report on October 15, 2013.

The mock visit is being conducted by Dr. Pam Fisher, who is part of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) and who is lending her expertise and experience in accreditation to provide input on what NMC employees should expect from the upcoming visit and to provide an assessment on the College’s readiness.

Dr. Fisher’s areas of focus while at NMC are consistent with those areas of concern identified by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges in its February 2013 action letter and the external evaluation report:

  • Mission;
  • Administrative capacity;
  • Human resource policies;
  • Access to Tinian and Rota;
  • Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) concerning information literacy;
  • NMC’s Facilities Master Plan;
  • Information Technology (IT) Services Operational Plan, Policy, and Procedures Governance structure

“Dr. Pam Fisher brings significant accreditation experience, and we are extremely glad that we the College can benefit first hand from her insight,” said NMC President Dr. Sharon Hart.

Dr. Fisher has over 30 years of experience and is a highly respected community college educator. She has twelve years as Chancellor of Yosemite CCD and has chaired visiting teams on ACCJC in the past, including those for Fresno City College, Diablo Valley College, and Saddleback College. In addition to chairing several teams, she also served as a team member on several others.

As part of the mock visit activities, Dr. Fisher will be offering independent insights based on experience as Visiting Team Chair, and a former CEO working with a Board of Regents/Trustees. She is making recommendations to the College using ACCJC’s Eligibility Requirements and Accreditation Standards to ensure it is meeting the recommendation identified by the last visiting team.

Additionally, Dr. Fisher is reviewing the evidence that verifies the assertions in the draft Show Cause Report that Accreditation Recommendation and Standards are met. Further, she is reviewing the draft 2013 Show Cause Report and conducting interviews on-site to help assess to what degree NMC meets ACCJC Eligibility Requirements.

She has already met with the members of the Board of Regents, the NMC President, and members of the College community. She will also be meeting with each Standard Team to provide them feedback and insight about their progress in meeting accreditation standards and requirements.
