NMC Program Donates Medical Devices to SSHS Nursing Assistant Students (June 6, 2012)

The CNMI Area Health Education Center at the Northern Marianas College recently donated $1,000 worth of blood pressure meters and stethoscopes to the Saipan Southern High School Nursing Assistantship program.

The medical devices were given to students to allow them to perform basic nursing care skills within the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation and other health care-related areas. Students who complete the Nursing Assistantship Program will be able to keep these medical devices for future use.

“In addition to equipping the students in the SSHS Nursing Assistantship Program to carry out their tasks and duties, we hope that the medical supplies we’ve donated will help them when they choose to continue their studies,” said CNMI AHEC program coordinator Orrin Pharmin.

The SSHS Nursing Assistantship Program is a secondary career technical education program for students interested in pursuing a career in the field of nursing. The two-year program provides students with the opportunity to become a nursing assistant and to take steps toward becoming a nurse.

CNMI AHEC at NMC has been providing technical assistance along with other organizations in the community, such as the Workforce Investment Agency, the CNMI Public School System and the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation, to the SSHS Nursing Assistantship Program since it was first started as a pilot project in 2009.

The CNMI AHEC is a program under the NMC Community Development Institute that aims to improve the health of people in the CNMI through education.
