NMC Student Selected to Attend Regional Island Sustainability Conference (April 12, 2012)

Northern Marianas College student Severino Alforeza was recently chosen to represent NMC at the University of Guam’s upcoming 3rd Annual Conference on Island Sustainability in Tumon, Guam.

The conference is hosted by the University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability (CIS), which endeavors to adapt and model sustainable technologies in order to address various issues to promote island sustainability in terms of the environment, economy, education, and society. This year’s theme is “Energizing Green Communities.”

“We are very proud of Severino,” said Barbara Merfalen, Dean of Academic Programs and Services. “We are confident that he will represent the Northern Marianas College well in the upcoming island sustainability conference.”

Alforeza, along with five students from other U.S. accredited institutions in the Pacific, submitted essays to CIS about what they each believe is a “sustainable island community” to earn the chance to participate in this conference as Regional Emerging Sustainability Scholars. Essays were evaluated based on relevance, technical merit, and creativity.

Students chosen to attend the conference will receive roundtrip airfare to Guam, hotel accommodations, meal allowances, as well as other services, through a grant from the U.S. Department of Interior, Office of Insular Affairs (DOI/OIA), and the Pacific Postsecondary Education Council (PPEC) in collaboration with UoG.

“I am very excited to attend the CIS conference in Guam and grateful for the opportunity to share my insights on sustainable island communities,” said Alforeza. “This will be a great experience for me to learn from experts on their respective fields about how we can better solve our islands’ environmental issues.”

Alforeza is currently pursuing an associate’s degree in Natural Resources Management at the Northern Marianas College. He hopes to one day become a marine biologist and an ecologist.
