NMC 2nd Annual Health Awareness Fair on April 16 (April 6, 2011)

The Northern Marianas College is inviting the community to the 2nd Annual NMC Health Awareness Fair on Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at the NMC Gym Field.

The Fair is co-sponsored and coordinated by the NMC Nursing Club and the Associated Students of NMC with support from the College Access Challenge Project, Proa Music Society, and volunteers from the NMC community.

“Our goal for this fair is to increase health awareness, to emphasize the importance of physical activity and eating healthy amongst our NMC students and people in the community,” said NMC Nursing Club President Mindy Park. “This year’s theme is ”Eat healthy and Live Healthy’.”

The NMC Nursing Club members will be offering free health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index, and cholesterol.

“By being involved in these health screenings, the NMC Nursing Club will be able to gauge the needs of the community in terms of health awareness,” said NMC Nursing Club President Mindy Park. “This will also give our nursing students the opportunity to practice their nursing skills by providing health education.”

Members in the community can also learn about the various health services programs that include the Women Infants and Children (WIC) program, which provides nutritional assistant to women and children under the age of 5.

The CNMI Diabetes Prevention Program, the Domestic Violence Coalition, Hardt Eye Clinic, the Comprehensive Cancer Control program, and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program will also provide different health teachings. The Department of Public Health will also be providing free HIV Rapid Tests, as well as information on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

The NMC Cooperative Research Education and Extension Service’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) will also be present to provide nutritional guidance and meal planning especially for families with young children. The program also teaches other useful skills like how to shop wisely for food, properly store food, and prepare nutritious meals.

In addition to health education, the Fair will also feature the Battle of the PROAs, which is a multi-sport battle of the sexes competition featuring NMC faculty, staff, and students. This year’s Battle includes volleyball, basketball, and an obstacle course.

For additional information, contact NMC Nursing Club President Mindy Park or ASNMC President Antonio Tiples at 234-5498 ext. 1250.
