NMC-CREES Plant Pathologist Receives Prestigious Award (March 1, 2011)

Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research, Extension and Education Service (NMC-CREES) Plant Pathologist Dr. Dilip Nandwani was recently awarded the Blue Ribbon Extension Communications Award at the annual American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) meeting hosted in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The prestigious award recognizes outstanding contributions of those who have reported on horticultural subjects using different forms of media. The ASHS was founded in 1903 and is composed of scientists dedicated to the advancement of horticultural research, education and application. Nandwani has been a member of the American Society for Horticultural Science since 2008.

Nandwani, who attended the annual ASHS meeting in early February, received the award for his publication “Banana Guide for the CNMI”. The publication features local varieties of banana, crop propagation and care, as well as production issues in the CNMI.

”The Blue Ribbon is a testament to the NMC-CREES team’s accomplishments and dedication to further advance agriculture to benefit the people in the CNMI,” said NMC-CREES director Ross Manglona. “We will work hard to continue to improve and enhance NMC-CREES efforts in assisting the community with their agricultural concerns.”

Nandwani and the NMC-CREES Crop Production team began promoting growing banana varieties in the CNMI by inviting members in the community, especially local, farmers to view banana crops and learn about the different aspects of growing bananas. Tasting of the bananas produces and the production of the “Banana Guide in the CNMI” soon followed.

“I would like to thank the NMC-CREES Crop Production team for their collaborative efforts to produce the ”˜Banana Guide in the CNMI,’ and Outreach Coordinator for designing the publication,” said Nandwani.

Nandwani added “I would also like to thank the whole NMC-CREES Administration for their help with our community outreach events.”

Copies of the award winning publication “The Banana Guide in the CNMI” are available at the NMC-CREES main office in Building F at NMC Campus in As Terlaje.
