Businesswoman of the Year Scholarship Applications Now Available (February 22, 2011)


Hagåtña, Guam ” First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business invite students to apply for the 2011 First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business Businesswoman of the Year scholarships for the Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 Semesters.

The program provides student scholarships at three higher education institutions in the Mariana Islands: University of Guam, Guam Community College and Northern Marianas College. Graduating seniors from Guam’s and the NMI’s high schools who are enrolling in the islands’ tertiary institutions are invited to apply as well. Application forms will be made available to all high school senior counselors’ and principals’ offices and will be available at the financial aid offices of all three tertiary institutions, at the First Hawaiian Bank branches and the Glimpses of Guam office.

The scholarships are intended to promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers, and are open to both full-time and part-time students. The scholarships will be awarded based on merit, eligibility, a written essay, and financial need. Applicants should have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The deadline to submit completed Fall 2011 applications has been extended to Wednesday, August 31, 2011. The deadline to submit completed Spring 2012 applications is January 31, 2012. Applications can also be picked up at the NMC Financial Aid Office in Building N at the NMC As Terlaje campus.

Funds for the scholarships will be raised through the 2011 Businesswoman of the Year gala at the Hyatt Regency Guam on April 30. The 2011 Businesswoman of the Year winner will be announced at the event.

The 2010 Businesswoman of the Year Maga’haga award recipient was Anna Wang Kao, founder and president of Genghis Khan Furniture Co. Past recipients include Lorraine S. Okada, executive manager of Carlsmith Ball LLP and president and owner of Managing Consulting Services; Katherine Calvo Sgro, executive vice president and chairwoman of the board for Pay-Less Markets Inc.; Christine Won Pat Baleto, general manager of Market Wholesale Distributors; Julienne Rose Perez Duenas, physical therapist, owner and clinical director of Sports, Orthopedic and Active Rehabilitation Inc.
