Info Session for Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (January 24, 2011)

The Northern Marianas College will be hosting an information session about the LEAP scholarship program on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, from 9am to 12pm at the Olympio T. Borja Memorial Library located in Building “O”. All interested members of the community are welcome to attend.

The LEAP scholarships will provide 23 residents of the CNMI and US-affiliated Pacific Islands with full tuition and travel-related costs for a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of North Texas (UNT).

Dr. Yvonne Chandler, Associate Professor at UNT, and Jane Barnwell from Hawaii's Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) will be in Saipan to promote the scholarship program.

The scholarships were made possible through grant funding from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. Successful applicants will receive full tuition costs to begin their studies in August, a laptop and broadband connectivity costs. Those interested need to submit their scholarship application by April 1, 2011.

Matthew Pastula, NMC's Director of Library Programs & Services, is the CNMI contact person for the scholarship program.

"I'm excited to be part of this opportunity that can help so many people obtain a master's degree," Pastula said. “I would like to see a large number of applicants from the CNMI further their education through this grant funded scholarship.”

Those interested in applying for the scholarship are strongly encouraged to attend the info session on January 26, 2011 to meet the coordinators. Applicants can also visit www.lis.unt.edu/leap/ for eligibility requirements, scholarship information and an application form.
